Thanks to our friends at Big Blue Bubble, I had the pleasure of getting a closer look at the upcoming Metal themed deck builder Power Chord. The core is the same as the last time I played, but I got a look at a brand new character and a deeper glimpse at this world's lore, which really brings Brutal Legend to mind.
Let’s start with the basics; Power Chord takes place in a world where an ancient order of Heavy Metal themed knights drove off hordes of demons long ago. Now those demons are returning, and it's up to you and your band to drive them off. The story, or what I’ve seen of it so far, is goofy and over the top in all the right ways, perfectly blending fantasy elements with rock and roll flair.
Each run of the game sees you choosing a path through the demon-infested tower, expanding your deck, and upgrading your bandmates with ability-boosting items along the way. Your
drummer acts as the team tank, the guitarist as your primary damage dealer, and bassist and vocalist as a status inflicting damage over time style mage, and main support, respectively.
While the vocalist in the original demo is more traditional healing support, Asher Odd, the new vocalist shown off here, uses a tarot deck and a more mystically themed element not only to boost his teammates but form a magical connection with him, allowing himself to cast the same spells they do. Asher offers a different layer of strategy and allows you to use your support more like a second damage dealer.
Asher’s other big focus is on stacking debuffs on the enemy team. You won’t need a lot of healing if the enemy can’t deal any damage.
While Power Chord’s release isn’t in sight just yet, you can still wishlist it on Steam, and every showing of this game only impresses me more. It’s one to keep an eye on.
