Free-to-play games have never appealed much to me. Too often they are saddled with mechanics that are reminiscent of old-school arcades; they are designed to suck money from you at a very specific cadence. Sure, there have been examples in my life, and often, the ones I like I have put money into, especially if they eschew “Pay to win” mechanics. For instance, I think I put about 400 dollars into the now-shutdown Marvel Heroes because it was a fun Diablo-style game, with lots of very nice-looking costumes. I am willing to pay for cosmetics generally, not an in-game advantage. I guess Marvel has some sort of rent-free space in my head, because the newest free-to-play game that has been taking up a lot of my time is once again owned by that infernal mouse, and that game is Marvel Snap.
Rich Meister's Top 10 Games of 2021
What a year. 2021 has been arguably the best year and a string of horrible years. Sure, we’ve still got that whole pandemic thing, and our country’s moral and financial integrity is crumbling from the inside out, but VIDEO GAMES! Also, that Spider-man movie was really good.
Despite the horrible odds, I’ve made it through another calendar year as Sword Chomp’s EIC, and I played a lot of really cool games. Tons of people said there weren’t many good games this year; those people are dumb as shit. Here are the ten games I thought kicked the most ass in 2021.
Josh Mcmullin's Top 10 Games of 2021
Hi, I’m a sometimes contributor to the ever-excellent Sword Chomp series of podcasts, Josh Mcmullin, aka THE Bebopman! I got asked to do a top ten list for the site and here I am. Look at me, ma! All joking aside, let’s get one thing straight, okay? There was A LOT of talk during the year that 2021 just had no games and that everything important was being pushed back due to COVID still being a thing. While I agree that several big highly anticipated titles were pushed back, that doesn’t mean that 2021 lacked good or even great games. As evidence, I tried my hand at a little challenge that one of my co-hosts set out for my own podcast. The challenge in question was to complete 20 games that we had never beaten before. I rarely play games to completion unless I really like it and this year, I hit that challenge. I played 31 games this year and completed 20 of them. What’s even better is that outside of my top three, which just flew up my rankings upon their launch, I had an incredibly hard time ranking most of them because they were all so good. That’s a long way of saying that 2022 was a great year in gaming and the games speak for themselves. So, without further ado, let’s talk about my top 10 of those games.
Review: Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
Author: Rich Meister
I’m a comic book nerd. It’s not something I’m shy about, nor in the year 2021 is it an unusual thing. That’s why I get to write a review for a Guardians of the Galaxy video game without having to go into elicit detail about who the fuck Groot is. That’s weird, but it's also kind of amazing.
On the subject of the modern popularity of comic book characters with the success of Insomniac’s Spider-man and their Wolverine adaption on the horizon we might be gearing towards a reality where Marvel games come out every year just like MCU films. I know that might sound like a bad idea, but if they’re all more like Eidos-Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy and less like Crystal Dynamic’s Avengers, then it might be an exciting prospect.
Review: Avengers
Marvel’s Avengers is a confusing game. On the surface, it’s easy to dismiss. I mean who could blame you, the marketing made it look about as bland as it can get at it’s lowest. Every time Avengers does something great and blows you away a baffling bad choice is waiting around the corner to make you question who would even make this. Cap and friends have the potential to be great, but in its current state, Avengers leaves the player frustrated and wanting.
