Review: Backbone

Backbone’s greatest asset is the world it builds. The dreary city streets are made all the more melancholy by the characters that inhabit them. It’s a Noir story through and through, at least, until it isn’t. That’s the strangest thing Backbone does; every single moment feels deliberate and brilliant, and then these moments are undercut by a narrative twist that borders on the absurd.

Review: Ratchet and Clank a Rift Apart

Review: Ratchet and Clank a Rift Apart

Ratchet and Clank have been around for almost two decades at this point. The latest entry in the series is smart enough to tackle this out of the gate with a parade celebrating the duo’s exploits, but even if there have been a few missteps along the way, a Rift Apart feels anything but stale.

Through both its visuals and gameplay, including the use of the PS5’s Dual Sense controller, it builds a truly next-gen experience. The clever writing Insomniac is known for weaves a fun tale on par with a Pixar film that both pays tribute to the series roots and feels welcoming to newcomers.

Review: Final Fantasy VII Remake INTERmission (Yuffie DLC)

Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally out on PS5. I could spend a whole article talking about how it runs on the new console and the mere breath of performance updates, but that’s not what this review is about. Instead, we’re here to talk about INTERmission, the Yuffie-centric DLC that dropped alongside the new port. It’s a side story first, but a fun one packed with familiar characters for long-time fans and one of the best mini-games Final Fantasy as a whole has cooked up in ages.

Review: Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Review: Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Mass Effect is an important series for RPGs and shooters alike. Throughout the original trilogy, it helped introduce a generation of players to the world of PC role-playing games while simultaneously bridging the gap between that world and the world of third-person shooters.

The Mass Effect Legendary Edition brings the story to modern consoles with the convenience to play them all in one convenient package. The trilogy as a whole holds up surprisingly well; even the earliest entry in the series is still mostly a joy to play, though having the whole story assembled makes it easier to see the flaws in this brilliant sci-fi story.

Review: Resident Evil Village

Review: Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil and I have quite the history. Though it’s a series I was late to the party on, with four being my introduction to the series, it grabbed me enough to revisit those old games during the heyday of the PlayStation 2. I spent hours traversing Raccoon City and was fully caught up and waiting for RE5. this fifth installment was ultimately a disappointment for me, and RE6 felt like an even more significant and stranger misstep.
